Nach einem Jahr vollgepackt mit Videospielen gehen zum Abschluss im Dezember jährlich die The Game Awards über die Bühne, wo die besten Vertreter ihrer Zunft von der Fachpresse und den Fans geehrt werden. Überblickend lässt sich das Jahr 2020 als eines der wohl schwierigsten seit der Jahrtausendwende zusammenfassen, denn mit COVID-19 hält ein Virus die Welt bis heute fest im Griff und nimmt Einfluss auf unser aller Leben. Davor blieb auch die Videospielbranche nicht verschont, wo Entwicklerstudios mit zahlreichen Verschiebungen zu kämpfen hatten. Dennoch lassen sich die sechs Nominierten für den Hauptpreis zum „Spiel des Jahres“ mehr als sehen und haben sich ihren Platz dort redlich verient. Diese Auserwählten sind Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Doom Eternal, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades und The Last of Us Part 2.
